VMWare was founded in 1998. The company is a subsidiary of Dell Technologies and chiefly provides cloud and virtualization services and software. VMWare was the first company to virtualize the x86 architecture environment at a commercial level successfully. The California-based company is headquartered in Palo Alto and is one of the biggest names in both software as well as hardware virtualisation tools.
VMWare develops both consumer as well as enterprise-oriented software tools. Its leading software products for personal or individual use are Fusion on the Mac platform and Workstation on the Windows and Linux platforms while its enterprise-grade software includes server hypervisors; VMWare ESX and ESXi are capable of directly running on server hardware without the need for an operating system.
The company provides a host of different services such as Virtual SAN, vSphere Infrastructure, SDDC platform, Hyper-Converged Infrastructure, Digital Workspace software, Application virtualisation, AirWatch Enterprise Mobility Management, TrustPoint Endpoint Security, and more. VMWare also offers some professional and technical consultancy services and targeted business, technology and industrial solutions.
What Does VMware Offer?
The VMWare Cloud Management platform is an all-encompassing management service developed especially for heterogeneous hybrid cloud infrastructures. The VMWare vRealize Suite enables resource administration and allocation for computing, archival, application, and network level resources and cloud management services.
Cloud management allows companies to rapidly adopt new technologies and workflows while at the same time minimizing expenses and overhead, all without breaking compliance with legacy technology. Virtualisation allows the seamless integration of traditional and more modern applications without needing changes in hardware architectures. Cloud Management not only addresses resource allocation but also ensures optimal performance and resource utilization post allocation while continuously monitoring system health. In cases with hybrid cloud infrastructures, the Cloud Management System must also optimally allocate resources across both the private and public cloud systems.
Thanks to VMWare’s robust Cloud Management services and the vRealize Suite, companies can now balance their physical and virtual environments and manage them extensively without any significant interruption in workflow. This is especially important now that we are in a transitionary period where cloud technologies are being adopted but have not yet completely replaced traditionally installed hardware infrastructures and legacy technology still handles a significant part of the work.
VMware Products and Services
VMWare’s Cloud Management Platform is realized chiefly across three discrete products, viz.
- vSphere with Operations Management that delivers vSphere service specifically optimized for efficient management of server virtualisation.
- vRealize Suite for providing a complete cloud management platform that can efficiently handle the management responsibilities of a heterogeneous hybrid cloud architecture.
- vCloud Suite that seamlessly integrates VMWare vSphere hypervisor technology and the vRealize Suite for cloud management into one entity.
The VMWare vSphere platform provides the core cloud infrastructure backbone on which the entire environment operates. In addition to providing state of the art operations management, the system also provides you greater insight and data that can dramatically improve performance and scalability. vSphere with Operations Management allows businesses to greatly simplify their data center based operations by enabling consolidation of services, which improves efficiency and brings down overhead. Both capital, as well as operational expenditures (CapEx and OpEx), can be reduced through the utilization of virtualization technology.
Additionally, vSphere can enable robust operations management and automation for data centers that allow it to monitor system health dynamically and automatically takes proactive steps to sustain performance levels. Application performance and availability are also significantly improved in a virtual environment, thereby increasing productivity. Both traditional, as well as containerised applications, can be executed at the same time on the same infrastructure thanks to vSphere. The vSphere Standard license costs USD 995 and “Production” support and subscription costs USD 273 annually while the vSphere with Operations Management Enterprise Plus license costs USD 4395 and “Production” support and subscription costs USD 1099 annually.
The VMWare vRealize Suite is the company’s enterprise-class cloud management platform that offers a comprehensive solution for managing hybrid heterogeneous cloud infrastructures. vRealize delivers intelligent operations and automation services, ensuring continuous monitoring of system resources across hybrid cloud environments and prompt management of infrastructure that results in optimal resource utilization. vRealize also provides IT that is DevOps-ready from day one. The Suite comprises four units, viz. vRealize Automation for automatic execution of infrastructure, services, and applications, vRealize Operations for resource management and monitoring, vRealize Log Insight for administration and analysis of system logs, and vRealize Business for Cloud, a financial tool for automated pricing and metering of infrastructure services.
The VMWare vCloud Suite seamlessly integrates the company’s vSphere hypervisor technology and vRealize cloud management platform. Thanks to the VMWare portable licensing unit or PLU, both vSphere based clouds as well as vRealize subscriptions can be built and managed from the vCloud Suite itself. The vCloud Suite enables robust data center virtualization, allowing you to consolidate servers and network resources to improve performance and application availability manifold while retaining scalability. vCloud also allows advanced IT automation services that can ensure rapid and automatic resource allocation throughout the hybrid cloud infrastructure as well as complete resource utilization by minimizing overhead and inefficiency. Operations management is essential for managing system availability, performance, and capacity optimally to ensure sustained service and operation.vCloud also gives you the ability to deliver a fully finished application stack that supports developer access from API as well as GUI across hybrid cloud resources. The Suite brings together VMWare’s flagship vRealize Suite Management and vSphere Compute Virtualization offerings into one coherent entity that can be utilized to maximum effect. The VMWare vCloud Suite ensures that discrete VMWare products cooperate with each other to exert maximum leverage on system process and ensure greater improvements in performance and efficiencies than might be possible with the separate but uncoordinated application of the same products. In effect, vCloud Suite maximizes the overall efficiency of operations and streamlines the entire process from beginning to end.
How to Buy VMware Products?
VMWare supports payment via credit cards for most of its software offerings. VMWare desktop applications can be purchased very easily from the website itself. The enterprise solutions are usually sold via a VMWare partner or reseller. These plans are usually paid for via mutual agreement or via wire transfer. Many recurring subscriptions to products and support services often require having a credit card on file.
Service Guarantees from VMWare Cloud Management services
VMWare is one of the earliest companies offering virtualisation services. VMWare virtualisation products existed before virtualization extensions for the x86 instruction set was developed. Virtualisation enabled CPUs came much later to the party as well. VMWare pretty much single-handedly gave birth to the hardware virtualization domain and has led the market ever since in terms of both application software as well as enterprise services. Virtualisation is now a staple in both enterprises as well as personal use cases.
VMWare software on the desktop and VMWare services at the enterprise level handily outweigh the nearest competitor. Additionally, VMWare virtualisation continues to support many older processors. Because VMWare uses binary translation to dynamically rewrite code when it cannot be directly executed on the CPU, performance is dramatically faster than software emulators. VMWare and its virtualization offerings are the cream of the crop in this industry.
Is VMWare Genuine?
VMWare is a subsidiary of Dell, one of the largest manufacturers of customer and enterprise grade hardware and business services. Now that VMWare has the financial backing and influential heft of Dell, the company has grown significantly in both the range as well as the scope of their products. However, ever since its inception, VMWare has always been an industry leader by providing innovative services that have always had the edge over the competition. VMWare was and remains the leader in the virtualization domain, and it is easy to see why. By continuing to provide reliable and high-performance virtualization products and services, it continues to earn the goodwill of new customers and retain the reputation it has built with legacy users.
VMware Support & Social Media Presence
VMWare maintains an active social media presence on all social media platforms. Its Facebook page has over 230,000 likes, which makes it a golden opportunity for customer outreach. The company releases updates on its products and services on Facebook and social media, thereby allowing news to reach the niche users that are typically the ones who avail its services. This bypasses the overhead and inefficiencies that are commonly associated with broadcast advertising. The company also publishes news regarding its various certification exams as well as news from the industry and new developments.
Alternatives to VMWare Cloud Management Service
VMWare is undoubtedly the leading provider of virtualization services in the business. However, some competitors have settled in particular niches. For instances, VirtualBox is a popular virtualization tool targeted towards novice desktop users. For most enterprise applications and services, however, VMWare remains the undisputed leader.
